I used three different search engines to look up the key word “book talks.” This is a strategy for getting kids interested in a book by telling about it without giving away too much information. It is not a book report but rather a book excerpt used to entice the students to want to read that book. I used Google, Bing, and Ask.
I found that Google and Bing gave the most websites that I could use in order to get ideas for book talks, show examples of book talks, and offer their own experiences with book talks. When I went to Ask, the page was framed top and bottom by ads for Barnes and Noble and WonderBook. In between the ads was the information I was looking for. I found similar sites on Google and Bing. Both sites gave me Scholastics web site on book talks. All three sites gave me Nancy Keene’s site on book talks.
All in all, I found that although Google and Bing were similar, Google provided the most useful sites for what I was looking for. Bing provided different sites but they were not better or worse than Google just different. Ask was the worst. It provided very few sites that were useful and mostly ads. I think that I will use Google first and save Bing for if I can’t find anything that I want or if I want something different. I doubt I would ever use Ask.
